What am I doing? Sunbathing my mushrooms to increase their vitamin D levels of course (is that weird?!)!
Studies show that putting mushrooms in direct sunlight increases the amount of bioavailable vitamin D2 in the mushrooms and that this?is as effective as the same amount of vitamin D2 or D3 taken in supplement form in raising blood vitamin D levels.
Vitamin D is vital for the uptake of calcium by the body for optimum bone density, not enough vitamin D means you can eat as much calcium as you like but it will just pass straight through you.
Vitamin D also has many other functions in the body, such as an involvement in immune system regulation. Many Hashi’s kids have low blood levels of vitamin D (I know I do) and the reasons for this are still being investigated.
To help my body obtain optimum levels of vitamin D in as natural a way as possible, I get out in the sun without sunscreen for 20 mins a day when I can, I eat good fats (as vitamin D is a fat soluble vitamin) and erm, yeah, I sunbathe my mushrooms!
